Top Knot

The top knot is the gathered-all-at-the-top knot — every piece of hair pulled to the very top of the head and twisted into a bun. Distinct from a high ponytail (no bun), a regular high bun (gathered slightly forward of the crown), or a ballerina bun (sleek and disciplined). The top knot is intentionally messier and faster than any of those.

It flatters oval, oblong, and heart faces — the high position elongates these shapes. Round and square faces can wear them but tend to look top-heavy. Straight, wavy, curly, and coily hair all wear them; the top-knot adapts to whatever natural texture is there.

Low styling maintenance — gather all hair to the very top of the head, twist into a bun, secure with an elastic and bobby pins. Two minutes. Optionally pull face-framing pieces out for softness. The top knot has been continuously worn across most cultures for the entire history of long hair tied up — it appears in every continent's traditional styling and entered Western mainstream as the default 'lazy day' option through the 2000s-2010s. Best on second-day or third-day hair (texture grips the knot better). The most-worn casual hairstyle on this list.
