Messy Bun

The messy bun is the most-used hairstyle on earth — gathered loosely at the top or back of the head, twisted into a bun, secured with one elastic, with pieces deliberately left out around the face. It's the hairstyle people wear to grocery stores, school drop-offs, Zoom meetings, and accidentally to formal events when they realize too late it actually looks good there too.

Works on basically every face shape and every texture — that's the whole pitch. Straight hair benefits from a day-old, slightly textured base (fresh wash is too slippery); wavy and curly hair holds the bun shape with no extra effort. Long and midi lengths bun cleanly; very short hair can do a 'mini' version with most of the back tucked in instead.

Thirty-second maintenance, by definition — gather, twist, secure, pull some pieces out around the face. No product, no skill, no mirror required after the first few times. Trim is whatever the underlying hair needs (every 8-10 weeks for most). The messy bun has no specific origin and no era; it has just slowly displaced the neat bun as the default for casual American and European wear since roughly 2010. The 'effortlessly undone' aesthetic that dominated 2015-2020 Instagram is essentially this haircut as a brand.
