Dutch Braids

Dutch braids are the 'inside-out' braid — three-strand braiding where the strands cross UNDER each other rather than over, which produces a 3D rope effect that sits visibly above the scalp rather than against it. The result is more dramatic and dimensional than a French braid. Often worn as double braids (two parallel Dutch braids down the head), which became the gym/athletic styling default circa 2015 and never quite left.

They flatter oval, round, and square faces — the 3D rope effect adds visual height (lengthening round faces) and frames the face symmetrically (balancing square jaws). Straight, wavy, and curly hair all wear them; the braiding technique adapts to whatever pattern is there. The technique works on any length from chin down.

Medium styling maintenance, no cut needed — wear over whatever base length you already have. Two parallel Dutch braids take 15-20 minutes with practice; single Dutch braid takes less. The style is one of the most popular athletic-styling defaults across women's sports (Kim Kardashian and the broader 'boxer braid' moment circa 2015 brought it into Western mainstream fashion, though the technique itself is much older). Styling, not cutting — the technique is what produces the look. The crossing-under (not over) is the whole point.
