Box Braids

Box braids are the classic protective style — natural hair sectioned into clean square partitions, with synthetic kanekalon hair braided in from the root for length, volume, and longevity. The style traces to ancient Egypt; the modern Western reference is Janet Jackson in Poetic Justice (1993). Sizes vary from very small (microbraids) to chunky (jumbo). Medium box size with waist-length lengths is the most-asked-for proportion.

They flatter every face shape — proportions can be adjusted in the install. Smaller boxes near the face soften round shapes; longer lengths balance square jaws. The style requires Type 3 or Type 4 hair underneath; box braids on straight hair won't grip the synthetic extensions properly. Install time runs 6-12 hours depending on size; expect to leave the salon at midnight if you started in the morning.

Low daily maintenance once installed — sleep with a satin bonnet, refresh edges with mousse, oil the scalp weekly. The braids themselves last 6-8 weeks; longer than that risks tension damage at the root. The 'knotless' variant (no knot at the start of each braid) reduces root tension and reads more natural. Bring a reference photo when you go to your braider — specify size, length, knot-free or traditional, and any feed-in pattern you want. Generic 'box braids' from someone who doesn't braid often will produce something you'll regret.
