Crown Braid

The crown braid is the styling where a single braid wraps fully around the crown of the head, forming a halo or 'crown' shape — distinct from a halo braid (similar but smaller and tighter to the head) and milkmaid braids (two braids pinned across, not one circling). The look reads romantic, slightly bohemian, slightly bridal, and works for almost any formal occasion.

It flatters oval, oblong, and heart faces — the horizontal line at the crown elongates oblong faces by drawing the eye upward, and balances heart shapes by adding visual width above the forehead. Straight, wavy, and curly textures all wear it; the braiding technique adapts to whatever pattern is there. Hair needs to be at least shoulder-length for the braid to circle the head fully.

Medium styling maintenance, no underlying cut needed — wear it over whatever length you already have. Start a French braid at the temple, weave it across the front of the hairline, continue around the head, secure at the start. The set takes 15-25 minutes with practice. The crown braid has been continuously worn in European folk dress since at least the medieval period and entered Western fashion mainstream through bridal styling in the 2000s-2010s. Hair must be at least shoulder-length — much shorter and the braid won't circle the head fully.
