Cornrows

Cornrows are the foundational protective style of African and African diaspora hair culture — natural hair braided flat to the scalp in continuous rows that pick up additional hair as they go. The patterns trace back thousands of years; they appear in Saharan rock art from 5000 BCE. The technique is the basis for almost every modern braided style: feed-ins, fulani patterns, boxer braids, every variant of cornrowed updo.

They flatter every face shape — pattern choices adapt to suit. Curved patterns soften square faces; straight-back patterns lengthen round faces. The style requires Type 3 or Type 4 hair for the braids to lie flat against the scalp and grip cleanly. Type 1 (straight) hair requires extensions to hold the rows.

Low maintenance once installed — sleep with a satin scarf, refresh with mousse every few days, scalp oil weekly. Cornrows last 4-6 weeks with proper care; longer than that risks tension damage. The style has been continuously worn across African and Caribbean cultures for millennia and has cycled through Western pop culture under various names since the 1960s (Bo Derek in 10 brought a controversial Western mainstream moment in 1979; the conversation about cultural appropriation traces back further). Choose your part pattern in advance — straight back, zig-zag, curved — and ask for medium-tight tension, never painfully tight.
