Slick Back

The slick back is the men's cut combed and gelled straight back from the forehead — no part, no front lift, just hair smoothed flat against the scalp going backward. Distinct from a pompadour (high and forward) and a side part (parted and combed sideways). The cut reads sharp-formal-Italian-mob in a way no other men's styling does.

It flatters oval, heart, and diamond faces — exposing the entire forehead and face works for shapes with strong bone structure. Round and square faces tend to look unframed under a true slick-back. Straight hair holds the styling longest; wavy hair can wear it but reverts to wave by mid-day; curly and coily textures need significantly more product to hold the slick look.

Medium daily maintenance — strong-hold gel or pomade combed straight back from the forehead, finished with hairspray for hold. Five to seven minutes most mornings. Re-cut every five weeks to maintain the medium length needed for the slick-back styling. The cut peaked in the 1980s (Gordon Gekko and the 80s Wall Street aesthetic, Pat Riley's perfect slick back as Lakers coach) and has cycled through fashion regularly since. The 2020s slick-back revival is softer and less aggressive than the 80s original. Cut medium length on top with shorter sides — styled with strong-hold gel or pomade combed straight back.
