Buzz Cut Fade

The buzz cut fade is the classic short cut with a clean fade at the sides and back — uniform length on top (usually #3 guard), tapering down through a #2, #1, and skin at the temples. The fade can be 'low' (starting near the bottom), 'mid,' or 'high'; each variant produces a different proportion. The cut is the most-asked-for men's short cut in barbershops worldwide.

It flatters oval, square, and diamond faces — bone structure carries the cut because there's no top hair to distract from the face. The fade slims the sides, which sharpens square and diamond shapes specifically. Every hair texture works; the fade reads slightly different on each (curly hair shows more visible texture on top, straight hair shows the cleanest fade lines).

Lowest possible daily maintenance — under one minute most mornings. Re-fade every three to four weeks at the barbershop to keep the fade lines crisp. The buzz cut fade has been the default barbershop short cut since electric clippers became standard equipment in the 1920s; the specific 'fade' terminology and the variants (low/mid/high, taper fade, burst fade) entered mainstream conversation through the 1990s-2000s with the broader influence of Black American barbershop culture on Western styling. Specify clipper guards — '#3 on top, fading to #0 at the temples and nape' produces the standard look.
