V-Cut

The V-cut is the long-hair cut with a deep V-shape at the back — center of the back significantly longer than the sides, creating a dramatic point that reaches mid-back when worn down. Internal layers stay long throughout. The cut became popular in the 1990s (Cher and a thousand album covers) and has cycled through fashion regularly since.

It flatters oval, heart, and oblong faces — the V-shape adds visual length to the back, balancing wider face shapes by extending the silhouette. Straight and lightly wavy hair shows the V cleanest; very curly hair loses the V definition under the curl pattern but can wear a softer version. The V works best on hair that's already past mid-back; on shorter lengths, the V becomes subtle.

Low daily maintenance — air-dry or quick brush-through, the V shape is built into the cut and doesn't need re-creating. Trim every ten weeks to maintain the V point — if the ends grow out unevenly, the V flattens. The cut peaked in popularity in the early 1990s and revived twice since (mid-2010s and 2022-23). Ask for 'a deep V at the back with the longest point reaching mid-back, no internal layers' — describing it as 'a long cut with a V' might get you something less precise.
