Color Blocking

Color blocking is the hair color technique where distinct sections of hair are colored in different blocks — clean geometric shapes, hard lines between sections, no blending. The look reads modern, graphic, and intentionally artificial. Distinct from highlights (which blend) and ombré (which gradients), color blocking is about clean color separation.

It flatters oval, heart, and square faces — the graphic shapes need strong facial geometry to anchor them. Straight and lightly wavy hair show the color blocks cleanest; very curly hair blurs the block edges under the curl pattern. The technique requires significant color commitment — most color blocking starts with pre-lightening to a base that the blocks read against.

High maintenance — root touch-ups every six to eight weeks, color refreshes as the blocks fade (typically every six weeks for vivid colors). The styling itself is just whatever the underlying cut is. Color blocking's modern era is the 2020s, with major visibility through TikTok and Instagram color-specialist accounts. The technique requires a colorist who specifically does block work; generic salon color won't produce the clean lines. Ask for 'clean geometric color sections, hard lines, no blending' — generic 'colorful hair' might produce blended ombré, which is the opposite.
