Shag Cut

The shag is the 1970s shoulder-length cut that Jane Fonda wore in Klute in 1971 and the world hasn't quite shut up about since. Choppy layers throughout, heavy texture at the ends, deliberate volume at the crown, and shaggy curtain bangs falling to the cheekbone. Length sits at the shoulder or just past — long enough to have movement, short enough to read as a 'cut' rather than 'long hair with layers.'

It loves wavy and curly hair most of all — the natural texture does the work, and the layered shape moves with whatever your hair already wants to do. Round, oval, and heart-shaped faces benefit from the framing; the volume at the crown elongates round faces, and the cheekbone-grazing layers do real architectural work on heart shapes. Straight hair can wear a shag but needs styling to avoid lying flat.

Low maintenance is the shag's whole pitch — it's meant to look slept-in. Rough-dry with mousse, scrunch in texturizing spray. Trim every ten weeks; the layers grow out organically. Peaked in 1971-1975 (Fonda in Klute, Stevie Nicks always) and again in 2021-2023 (Florence Welch, half of TikTok).
